Question Who should be the next Doctor

If as an earlier post said. Doctor Who is back in British hands. Who would make the best replacement Doctor?

For me I think one of two would be good, depending upon which way the BBC wishes to take it. More serious and less camp as in the later years), or vice-versa:-

Serious with a happy face- How about David Jason (Fools and Horses, Frost)

Comic with Serious (and other faces):- Rowan Atkinson (Black Adder)

Thinking of it Atkinson would probably make a good Master as well

Good idea about David Jason.

Paul McGann would be OK if it was British made.

No one else comes to mind, but I'll keep thinking about it!

I'll add another to the pot. How about Derek Jacobi?

A genuine stage actor, like the best of the Doctors have been and has the 'presence'. Whilst most of his film roles have been the heavy article (Richard the Third, Caedfael, I Claudius etc) there is a lot of lighter stuff in the list too, especially on stage.

That's a good suggestion Ray, and in the same vein I think Ian Holm could be quite good - I am thinking of his role in The Fifth Element here as a pointer. We all know he can do serious too, but SciFi farce worked pretty well for him in that film, not that I am saying Dr Who is farcical, just that Holm is pretty versatile.

What about some younger people? Or do you think that going in that direction would be just plain wrong?

Gareth Gates for DW? (I am soooo joking here)

But what about someone like Ewan McGregor? Okay, I know he is a bit too much of a mega star, and it isn't that likely, but I think he would probably do a good job.

Christopher ecclestone?

Trouble is, I am struggling to think of a youngish TV actor that doesn't have to wave and shout "Hello, I'm here!" in an empty room.

Besides I think the Doctor should look as if he might have a few Galaxy Miles under his belt.

Peter Davidson, should have been great. But he looked as if he had finished public schooling.

Perhaps if they carried out the threat of making the Doctor female, they could look at Sandy Toxteg?

Arg, no.

Interesting that you should mention her - they were just talking about her running for Chancellor of Oxford University a few minutes ago on the television.
I just don't like the idea of a female doctor, but if it was absolutely unavoidable then definitely Zoe Wannamaker, or Jo Brand

Think Gery Oldman would make a reasonable candidate, but I wonder if the Master would be more to his taste

Please, not Jo Brand! At least the Daleks would hold no fear. She could sit on them!

This is farily obscure, but Lenny Henry is one of my favorite British actors... I think he would do a great job.

IMO, the doctor can't be a serious type. Has to have some comedy lightness. Not the typical serious Hollywood technobabble actors.

That's a great suggestion, I agree that there has to be some humour to the Doctor, and as I recall, Lenny does okay with the more serious stuff too - I can't remember the name of the series drama set in a school he was in, but he was very good in it.

Also, I'd love to see Patric Stewart play The Doctor.

IGN filmforce has a poll for this:
http://filmforce.ign.com/drwho//polls/5730.html

They have a few more options to throw into the pot:

Quote:
John Cleese
Paul McGann
Anthony Stewart Head
Joanna Lumley
Sean Pertwee
Sean Bean
Rowan Atkinson
John Rhys Davies
I don't care how old he is BRING BACK TOM BAKER!
Rowan Atkinson or John Cleese would be interesting.

From that list:
I think Anthony Stewart Head would be fab. I don't even really know why, he just would, so there!

John Cleese - I think he is too much of his own big personality to really be an effective DW. It would be hard not to see him as John CLeese.

Joanna Lumley - lol, I think she could pull it off, but I can't really see it happening.

Sean Bean - I like this guy, but NO WAY could he be the Doctor, he has charisma, but its the hard-man-don't-mess-with-me kinda charisma, and I can't see it working well for DW

Roan Atkinson - NO! Was he a comic relief Dr Who at some point? Or was that Stephen Fry?

John Rhys Jones would be great! I love watching him ham in up in old Sliders re-runs!

What about, as a younger candidate, Hornblower, you know Ioan Gruff-something?
